DE RISK in DEALING with DE-RISKING
Saturday, April 10, 2021 - daily column #6724
Everyone processes things differently.
Not rightly, not wrongly, not backwards, nor upside down – just differently.
Vive la difference …
I have some work recently with a client, wrestling with choices I wouldn’t wrestle with, but his perspective is different. His personality type is vastly different from my own, so my approach in dealing with him is something I need to measure carefully.
And learn from.
It’s not generational or cultural, so much as it is personality type – and I’m sure the Meyers-Briggs tools would show us far apart in terms of how our brains work, how we process information and handle decision making.
This real-life example of something I’ve often encountered in courses, in the theoretical sense, is something I need, and perhaps we all need periodically, to ground us in the realization there are many ways to see the same set of facts, to consider the same variables, and for what?
The outcome will be what it is; the choice he will ultimately come to will be the one that makes the most sense, is logical, and finally feels right. But it’s that time and mental wrestling match leading up to the decision-making time when brain cells are numbed and atrophy. That’s where the work is; that’s where the stress and sleep-loss manifests.
It’s the hope to de-risk something and figure out all the options, pro and con. It’s not how I would do things – and it shouldn’t be because it’s the way he would do something.
Reader feedback:
Good morning Mark. Speaking of action, and balance, have you been able to get your COVID vaccination yet? Are you age eligible? I am going this afternoon for the Moderna or Pfizer shot. First in a two step process. Good timing too – the weather is supposed to turn for the better Sunday and the sun will shine upon us all next week. Yiipppeeeeee! Stay safe, RT, White Rock, BC
