STORMY WEATHER
Tuesday, April 20, 2021
Difficulty and struggle are norms of life.
Struggles make us stronger, keep us vital – more than simply surviving, but thriving. When our survival gets threatened, the best within us and the worst of us emerge, exposed for all to see.
From seeds germinating to a breech-birth baby, from learning how to cross streets safely to climbing mountains – both actual and psychological mountains, we struggle.
Competitive, combative, and cooperation are terms taking on new dimensions. We shift from coasting easily to fighting for our lives. At no time in my life has fear-for-life been as widespread and fundamental as during this pandemic storm cloud. While many will boast of how minor it is globally in terms of deaths and lingering medical issues – and property credit doctors, drugs, and vaccine development speed, it’s still horrific.
What damage has been done to any of us, to all of us, beyond that is questionable.
It has destroyed some businesses and given rise to others that thrive.
It has decimated weak organizations, medically frail – and psychologically weak folk too.
So how do we know if we are weak or strong?
Which are we when push comes to shove?
Are we weak and dependent?
Are we solid and stable, grounded and capable of helping others?
P.S.: coping with anger is never new, but I saw something the other day, which gave me pause for thought. On the one hand, an unlikely-looking fellow, but on the other hand – someone with both scholarship and personally acquired wisdom – don’t scoff at older men with wispy white hair – we’ve earned it in a hard life. Or is that from living life hard?
Reader feedback:
