If the leader sits down, there can neither be leadership or followership.
YOU are the leader of you, I am the leader of me. What we need do is lead, and follow our own statements and affirmations of who we are/where we are going. We need it, every day. Nobody can give it to us. We can’t buy this in stores or hire consultants or coaches to do it for us.
I struggle with many things about myself, best described as ‘work in progress’ – long term things like health and fitness, successful projects, ambitions to fulfil and bucket-list-type dreams to live out. Yet, just as many of those are long-term tasks, they require short-term daily commitment, spurts of effort along the way. They can’t be done ‘at one moment in time’ in the future – they need to be built, a little bit every day. Incremental change works at glacial speed for glaciers, but most of us don’t have that much time to wait. We want erupting change, disrupting change – and it has consequences for ourselves and for those around us …
Sometimes we need to change management or staff – but in most important personal matters, we need leadership change – not change of our leader, but change IN our leader.
Is powerful meaningful transformative change in our lives something we can only accomplish through lengthy arduous struggle – or can we also make change ‘in the moment’, can we not resolve to metaphorically ‘put our foot down’, say “enough is enough” and start that change, right here, right now, today? Well can we? Can you?
