Readin’, writin’, ’rithmatic …
Three legs to the educational stool – so it used to be.
Codin’, gamin’, tweetin’ seems to be the fashion now.
What is it we need – or needed – when we were being educated that will serve us best in the future?
For most of us, we barely know now – so how could we have known then?
Mentors, coaches, advocates – could have used some. Sure, there were people – parents, teachers, coaches, preachers. Growing up I saw plenty of those too. But they didn’t take much interest. Not the way I see it now. I see how my daughter is deliberate and kind and nurturing to my grandchildren – I couldn’t want anything better for them.
This is not a blame piece – I’m not trying to take issue with all the people who didn’t do, who didn’t give encouragement, who didn’t give ideas, who didn’t give a kick in the pants along with the pat on the back. There were glimmers – bits, pieces of people, men mostly, gave me bits and bites of what I should shoot for, of what/who I could be, but not intensely of repetition.
So, we are formed by something, by someone, by some things – aren’t we?
What are those?
