IF A FROG HAD WINGS

Wednesday, August 31, 2022 - column #7106

I first heard the ‘if a frog had wings story’ from a friend – Dirk. That was about 35 years ago. I enjoyed the story then. I found his explanation meaningful because he felt it applied to my situation in the course of a discussion we were having about a mistake I’d made, a situation I’d misjudged. He offered some advice, consoling my angst, suggesting that for the next big opportunity I went after, I’d be better armed (stung!) from that fresh experience, that learning that would guide me to not kick myself from behind again.

I’ve not thought about it seriously since then; I have passed it along to others over the years without much thought, but it floated back into my mind recently as a better message for me, and for now …

It’s not about frogs, or wings, or kicking ourselves.

I think it’s a better, more profound message about imagination.

Why can’t the frog have wings?

Why can’t we?

Whether something is possible or impossible is always a question. The better question is whether we think a big idea, big project, or big hairy audacious goal (BHAG) is possible and whether we do anything about it.

We can invent/build incredibly complicated things that fly to the moon, or we can create less complex but no less bold solutions to issues or problems we have. It’s more complex than fixing a faucet and less complicated than a space mission. Somewhere between those too – that’s where we belong, that’s where we can do our best work.
