THE HIGH BAR
Friday, August 6, 2021
I sit, stand, wake, sleep, shower, eat, and walk – never missing a day.
No calendared recurring ‘to do’ task.
Friend calls, routine actions, predictable routes, meetings – all rote.
Somethings are never forgotten, never missed, somethings never remembered, ever.
I have a reminder at my writing desk: DO YOUR SITUPS.
Like many notes – cues, physical and mental reminders – things I want not to forget, starting with my daily readings and affirmations folder. DON’T MISS TWICE note, pre-berating intolerance of breaking a valued habit or disrupting a proven practice for instilling new ones. Roadmap, reminders, need to do ones, don’t forget ones – not because they are large, but because they are small.
I never make a note to remind me to take my morning walk. I never miss.
I have notes reminding me to do my sit ups, because it’s a habit I’m working hard to do every day, not because I love doing sit ups but because I need healthy.
A need to walk, from lazy and short to full-out long, makes me go every day, part of this process of writing every day, connected and, in 6,862 times so far I’ve never missed. I’ve learned how valuable that has become for me and I want that kind of success in many other elements of my life.
Which begs this question: if we get better every day, where is the maximum – our high bar?
And just when we master the high jumping someone will introduce us to pole vaulting …
Now, little changes, with large consequences – meriting self-imposed steadiness, holding firm to what tethers me to avoid being washed away or set adrift.
