TAKING TIME
Saturday, August 8, 2020
Taking time, a term often used in connection with taking time off, taking vacations, or weekends – or the mending, grieving, recovering process to get over something, to get through something or to simply deal with something that won’t change or go away – we need to take the time.
Today I would like to focus on another form of taking time.
Taking time to talk. Taking time to be face to face with someone, without distraction, to engage each other. Taking time to spend with someone, is vital in every form of social intercourse (and that other kind too!) like properly positioned long pauses in a speech, like paragraph breaks and punctuation in our writing ~ causing listener, reader, or the person holding your hand to pause with you, taking time to take it all in.
Taking time to get ready, is something we don’t do enough in our nanosecond-speed society, our instant communication and social connection world. We don’t save things as ‘DRAFT’ often enough, we don’t talk things through enough – we shoot first, ask for clarification later. We hit send too soon, we determine things are over without sufficient patience, we make decisions (large or small ones) hastily and cannot put the toothpaste back in the tube.
Taking time to prepare for a pitch, taking time to rehearse and map out a plan, taking time to formulate a strategy – and then executing seems urgent. If we don’t take time to share that with anyone, to flesh out pro v. con, if we don’t explore all the possibilities, we’ll only be partially successful when we could so easily be so much more.
P.S.: thanks so much to all those who called or wrote (including those noted below) to wish me well and to have a dialogue about getting older, about feeling younger, about voicing our reality and our humanity – thank you, thank you, thank you
