ALWAYS THERE
Saturday Dec. 26. 2015
I had a marvelous day yesterday. Two children, their parents, their parents and their dad’s uncle – as complete a gathering as required to make a dent in any turkey and to assemble enough toys and goodies to match the GDP of some small country. Kids don’t care – they’ll share all, or share little, but what they won’t forget …
Truth is, they’ll forget much. Imaginary games and incremental learning take them through childhood, one step at a time. When older, they won’t remember specifics but they will easily recall their birthdays, Christmases and special times with – ‘my grandparents were always there’. I like that simple truth. Precious two, grande children – lucky us.
Imagination is naturally occurring. Or is it a skill?
Children squealing delightedly with latest gadget, or old tape measure, there is magic in it. Somewhere between five and adult, we lose that skill, give up that quality. We don’t actually lose it, we just don’t use it. It will atrophy like an unused muscle. Get it back. Squeal out loud again. Laugh for no reason, giggle at any idea floating by. Imagination needn’t require interpretation. Just have it. Recalled on demand, anytime, anywhere, in finest moments or deepest despair – it’s always there.
