MORNING AFTER
Monday, December 26, 2022
I woke up yesterday to learn there was nothing new in the world.
The routine expectations – car crashes, storm-related power outages, no massive shifts in economies or the earth’s plates. Poverty was unchanged; markets were closed – it was Sunday, it was Christmas day, and it was a quiet morning.
War was still war, and peace was still peace. Inflation was still high, life and death were constant companions everywhere, and Boxing Day sale advertising is busy luring us back to stores to spend more than what we returned …
Our economic balance is not an inner-ear thing as much as it is a balance our feelings construct; for some, we need more and more.
For some, it is about doing more with less, more or less …
For the vast majority, we are in the middle between uncertainty and disbelief.
Who to trust?
Who to believe?
What is truth?
Who to count on, what to need, when to want, and how to give – these questions don’t require answers, but they deserve thought.
The words of Buddha and Voltaire seem appropriate as I look back on the last few days of preparing for and having a turkey-day celebration of life and living, of challenges and giving and taking, and giving – these things seem circular:
“There is no path to happiness; happiness is the path.” – Buddha
“I have chosen to be happy because it’s good for my health.” - Voltaire
