Homeward bound today …
Homeward used to mean back to Edmonton (1973-99), but after a weekend in the Capital area and time squeezing kids in Fort Saskatchewan is over, homeward bound means returning to Calgary for a month of year winding-up and new year preparation activities.
Getting away from routine, away from familiar surroundings and seeing old stomping grounds is like doing a drive-through of the CV; showing Hazel around my Edmonton – where I lived, worked, played, projects and schools, a pilgrimage to the Bon Ton bakery, a visit to my favourite noodle house after too many years (I was taken there for the first time shortly after they opened in 1986) for lunch, and hanging out with kids …
There is so much value in seeing family in the flesh that cannot be manufactured by phone or email – it must be seen and hugged. And, a roundtrip road trip of long-form storytelling without interruption – magic.
