STUMBLE UPON THIS LESSON
Monday, February 13, 2023
In every fall, the season lives a lesson in finality.
Every fall or stumble when we fail at something, and each time we get up again, more ready and bracing for the next …
Sometimes a lesson learned in a moment – an event moment – changes us. Sometimes it is a lesson delivered over a very long time that shows up, presents itself in an isolated ah+ha moment, we exclaim,
“Now I get it.”
Sometimes we get what we want every day …
Sometimes we wait what seems like a lifetime not to get it, leaving empty-handed.
People are who they are and live their lives with every quirk and shortcoming you can imagine and many you would never have thought. Because we live our lives in secret, in privacy, and so does everyone else; so when someone cannot or will not open up, it’s never our right to know – always ‘they’re right to share, or not.’
Others see what we show them.
No more than that.
There is a phrase I’d like to purge.
I’ve used it myself, so my message – for myself and others – is to eliminate the phrase, “if there is anything I can do, just call me.”
It is said so often by people who say it to show that they mean well. The truth is, these words are too often an empty gesture in the giving but of little use to the receiver – because they realize it’s an empty gesture from someone who didn’t know what to say.
It’s been pleasant here lately, but we shouldn’t get smug about the arrival of spring because we have plenty of winter yet to come.
Reader feedback:
All that is fine. I’m sure each one of us could produce our own top 100 But,,,, you didn’t tell us your favorite in today’s “big” game, DM, Calgary, AB
Happy Superbowl Sunday. This was an enjoyable read. That list, though, makes me wonder about its criteria for inclusion and ranking. As you pointed out, not all changes are positive or have pleasant origins but have profound effects. Some of those listed had great impact, but not everyone was or is a “game changer “. They are simply people of note, HM, Calgary, AB
