SEEING OLD THINGS IN NEW WAYS
Sunday, February 6, 2022

Things we took for granted all our lives we now so quickly/easily dismiss as ‘things we used to do’ for so many. Amid this brew of thoughts are some self-questioning whether it’s aging, ‘the times’, the pandemic, or me that is the cause. Each of these is an excuse, and it would be easy to set it aside as something to not worry about; I seem seized with figuring this out.

Taking time off for an extended period has faded into memory.

Over the past two years, vacationing – taking a trip, a plane ride – these have become different experiences in my psyche.

They’ve become things I used to do …

With the speculation/hope this pandemic may be waning, and with restrictions being lifted soon, I’m resuming thoughts of vacations and memories of extended long weekends away.

It feels a bit like the resume button in our vehicles – and suddenly, the brain has permission to think about and plan those overdue trips. It does focus the mind, though, from where I want to go, over to what do I not want to miss. In the end, most of us will probably take the same trips either way, but I think the brain is getting re-wired because this precious thing is not to be taken as lightly as it once was because we’ve been without it so long. Its value has risen.
