TSW - STORYTELLING TIME
Monday, February 8, 2021 - daily column #6662
Welcome to the world of sales, nuthin’ to it, really – just tell a story.
Beyond telling for selling or telling a story to sell ourselves, telling stories is an integral part of life – both the stories we tell others and the stories we tell ourselves.
I have a story inside. You probably do too.
We have hundreds, most of which aren’t valuable, but many which are. Stories that matter because of what was learned, taught, explained, exposed, or laughed about.
A story to tell – a secret to reveal, an ambition to breathe life into, a lesson-learned to be shared …
Hidden in a drawer, buried in a diary, or silenced by fear – our stories never get out, never see the light of day, never give anyone a chance to know what you know, learn what you’ve learned, or ponder what you are considering next, what you dream about.
Those are important stories. Tell one to someone. Easier once you start, then tell another.
Now, put yourself down on the head doctor’s couch. What story would you tell to explain your unspoken pain, your hidden fear, and your unrequited joy?
By-pass that couch, and no need to be on a stage – just tell yourself, say it out loud or write it down but spit it up, give it air and daylight. Some pain subsides that way, some fears evaporate that way, and some unrealized dreams take on a new shape once voiced aloud.
In other words, rehearse. Practice aloud and privately to tell the stories you are afraid to tell, explain the problem or complaint you are too scared to voice, and say out loud what dreams sustain you …
This stuff works.
Reader feedback:
Mark, as usual you got it right and, unfortunately, none of this surprises me. We also know that politicians don’t even follow through on their own election promises. LH, Lethbridge, AB
