MARK'S SPEAKING TIPS

HALFWAY CLARIFICATION
Sunday, January 16, 2022

Too often, when I need to shut the noise off, turn down the volume, mute the noisy ones and the quiet ones too – then blank slate, empty agenda – pieces that matter most; the most urgent, the most relevant, the most deeply felt come back into play.

Inside our head is a busy place – not all the time for everyone, but often for most of us a crossroads, where ideas and problems intersect like high-speed freeways merging with higher-speed ones.

We serve and march to so many drummers and driving forces that it’s hard to find clarity. The clarity is there but, amid dust and noise and confusion clock ~ elusive.

Each year I start January with an emptied top drawer of the filing cabinet. As each file, project, issue and matter comes to my desk, it gets some work – and goes into the top drawer or the round file.

At this point in January, I am clear about a few things that have made their way to the top drawer. This process doesn’t quell the howling dogs of troubles past or derail the long-term future dreams, but it does draw focus to spend time and effort on things that matter most.

Each day of survival through tough times – haven’t we known that – is a stepping stone to whatever comes next, whichever clever or lucky thing comes next.

It’s halfway through January – what comes next for you?
