FORCE OF HABIT, FORCE THE HABIT

Habit-forming.
We know this phrase.
We all know it as something we often do that becomes automatic or addictive; it’s habit-forming.
We know the easy to identify ones – really good habits and really bad habits.
They’re obvious.
There are so many fuzzy area ones of good/badness and smart/dumbness.
If we examine the many parts of our domestic and offices lives as if we were efficiency experts doing time and motion studies in factories, we could probably save ourselves an hour or more every day.
Add to that elimination of wasteful mind-numbing unnecessary screen time, getting a better balance between sleep and exercise – and soon, we are talking a significant part of our day. And for those with sharp pencils, add that total time saving to ‘elimination of a commute’ … and we’ll have enough spare time to take on a second part-time job!
But seriously, what about the habit we want to have, want to create, setting ourselves on a better path – how are we forming that habit?
Is it just mindful intention, or do we need a plan – a process to make sure we do it?
A checklist, sticky notes on fridge and medicine cabinet doors?
Forming a habit, or eliminating one, is easy mind-candy.
Not so easy to do.
What reasons could we have for purging bad habits or starting better ones?
Obvious answers of saving time, money, stress, and creating better health are nice-to-haves but are we really driven to do them.
There is always the health scare event or a scary diagnosis – that gets people motivated.
How about changing habits to avoid that health scare or scary diagnosis?
