THE BEST THINGS ARE THE ONES WE GIVE AWAY

Monday, July 11, 2022

Life is made of what we get and what we give.

Please tell me if you think there is anything that doesn’t fit into one of those categories – and I’ll wager there is a connection between something we get and something we give.

Take advice, for instance.

We give it, and whether or not our advice is heeded, we’ve provided our gift, our contribution toward helping someone or some organization to get better at what they do. We probably hone our skills in giving construction encouraging feedback vs. complaining, but nobody’s perfect ….

On the other hand, we receive and process advice – some we take, some we discard, because that’s a judgement call, but we cannot deny there was giving and receiving.

I was having a discussion yesterday – connecting a story with a meeting and conversation on Saturday – and while the term ‘small world’ came up, it was more about how our deeds and connections go far beyond that six-degrees-of-separation notion. Still, there is a give-take to every relationship with a person, and the things that connect us best, most, and often surprisingly, are not things.

These are memoire-worthy experiences, and we double the pleasure when those are experienced with others because then you each have the experience, the memory, and stories worth recalling someday; hence when it’s a cold rainy day, and we find ourselves staring out a window – it is those memories which flow and re-give the experience.

Have you given someone a kind word or given unsolicited advice to help them get better or be better?

Everyone wants to laugh and enjoy, but mostly we want to do worthwhile work, so who are you helping today?

What have you thought about giving away today?
