TO A FRIEND WHO HAS DRIFTED AWAY
Thursday, July 15, 2021
Birthday greetings to the smartest guy I know.
He’s always the smartest guy in any room he is in – but we don’t talk much anymore.
I miss that in any friend when they drift away, as this one has. I miss the friend, the friendship, time spent together but more than that, I miss the discussions …
We know so much and have access to so much knowledge, to the point that it boggles the mind. We know so little, live lives so narrow and so local that we cannot possibly understand our world. How can we be so intelligent in our own right AND have access to so much information at our fingertips to keep us so well informed yet understand the world so little?
Despite distractions of the appropriate kind (i.e. pandemics, geopolitics, environment) and the inappropriate kind too (i.e. Instagram, tik tok, video games) – we cannot possibly, as one person, have a significant impact on our world?
If we only had the time …
What else, besides time, do you have?
May your day be happy, may your year be full, then may you give your all to the world – because the world, and your friend, have such high expectations of what you can do with the big brain and kind heart of yours.
When a year goes by, and you don’t see a friend, it seems you’ve drifted. When it’s two years or more, it’s a crucial disconnection worth noting – and no doubt people are busy with fully complicated lives and competing commitments, demands, and values.
But changes are noticed, and there is little comfort in that old saying:
“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever, the same.” – Flavia Weedn.
Have a great birthday.
