THIS STORY

Saturday July 27, 2019

We all have a story, not our autobiographical novel of lost love, unrequited love, hurt feelings or unfulfilled ambitions – everybody has one brewing …

For most, that story festers, never seeing light of day, never read or heard by anyone, even though it plays over and over in their head. Psychologist label these ‘tapes’. Tapes of what was heard from overbearing parent, bully, nun, coach or older sibling.

But I’m talking about a different story.

This story eats at us a little bit, if we let it, and hollows out the inside of our spirit. This story tells us we are wrong to think a thought, so we don’t let ourselves think it. This story tells us we are not good enough to get the job, get the deal, get the girl … etc. , so we listen and hold back.

This story tells us the reason for everything we can’t do or for everything that goes wrong is because of something we didn’t do a long time ago – we didn’t choose right fork in the education or career road, spouse-choosing, lifestyle or friend choices. We picked wrong, therefore our future is cast and going back is impossible. We all tell ourselves versions of this story. If someone tells you they aren’t, save debate time and just call them out as bare-faced liars, because they are.

This story can remain monkey-on-our-back, or can fuel our drive.

This story can remake us – not changing costumes or a facelift, because we are still who we are, but we can change the path of our experience.
