IN SEARCH OF INTELLIGENCE AND TRUST

I need a distraction from thinking about COVID life, and it seems stupid is not in short supply.
Judging people’s character accurately is a fascinating and sometimes frustrating exercise, because of the angst caused when we choose to work with or befriend people unwisely, and because we don’t want to share our business, our trust, or our money with idiots.
I suppose it doesn’t matter. We don’t need to assess others. The character of a store clerk or gas pump attendant doesn’t matter. Neither does anyone else up the ladder in any organization, that is, except for one thing. If they are doing anything at all with our affairs, our business, our livelihood, or anyone we care about – then it matters, right?
Character matters, but the only one we control is ourselves. I think most people like to deal with like-minded people. Liars, cheats, and crooks probably don’t mind how they are treated by anyone, but I doubt they choose liars, cheats, and crooks when they need help.
I want the doctor who got straight A’s and knows how to cut straight. I want the mechanic who wants me to come again more than he wants my money. I want a smile in the store from someone who rings up my purchase and doesn’t short-change me.
But sometimes, stupid and logic are far removed from reality.
Both Mr. Trudeau and the WE folks say they withdrew first …
But their hypocrisy was trumped for me yesterday.
I walked into Sobeys – where bins of watermelons were on display, for $9.00. Two rows over, ½ watermelons (they’d been cut in half and wrapped in cellophane) were offered at $8.99 each. I guess they are following the Trudeau/We lead, assuming we are stupid fools who cannot do arithmetic.
I shop at Sobeys because their store is closer to me than others, within walking distance – convenient to where I live, but paying twice the price so someone else can cut my watermelon in half makes as much sense as having a charity distribute government program money when 220,000+ civil servants are largely idled by COVID.
I don’t know if Mr. Trudeau and Sobeys think we are liars, cheats, or crooks – but clearly, they both believe we are stupid.
