I’VE SEEN ALL THREE
Tuesday, July 6, 2021
I was watching a film – Mike Nichols, being interviewed about his career, explaining some secrets and lessons learned in film making, directing and screenwriting – and by extension, novel writing and interactions in all relationships, something he lived by:
“There are only three kinds of scenes: a fight, a seduction, or a negotiation.”
I immediately realized his wisdom in those words. I may not be more effective with this knowledge, but I believe I will. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been observing meetings I’ve been in and conversations I’ve had, more carefully with Mike’s wisdom in mind – and I’ve realized that when those interactions go well, that’s precisely what they were: a fight, a seduction, or a negotiation.
When some meetings or conversations go badly, I realize it is because it lacked any of those.
