How do we teach sons to be dads, what do we teach daughters? Fathering? Easy. Sperm contribution. Name them, give them your surname, gets you started …

What else?

I did more than he. What he did, but more. Better. More thoughtfully. Where did he learn? My dad learned from his dad. Looking back on our results, proudly – like an artist’s retrospective on his portfolio, realizing we could have done better, done much more, differently – if we knew then, what we know now …

We knew what to do, didn’t we? We learned, thought, did. Never well enough. Still, our children grew up. Shone. Could have done so much more, done better.

Being a good dad? That’s entirely different territory. It was never about getting from them, but always about giving to them, for them …

morning walk with Gusta:  12C/54F, slight breeze, clouds but lots of blue to see – Gusta feeling better, me not so much – she romped and I trailed behind. Better now …
