CALL DISPLAY

Phone rings – we check call display, wanting to know who is calling rather than just answering.
Why?
Sure, we all get too many robo-calls, technology blasting recorded messages saying we’ve won a trip, asks survey questions, pitches products or furnace cleaning etc.
Some evenings, just another human voice would be great relief.
What happens when we look?
Before we know the reason for their call, pre-third ring, call display tells us who is calling. Not why, but who? Or is that for whom?
Which is better – friend catching up, family member touching base or stranger with something important to say/ask?
On those days when we are weary, cranky, not our best – might me better not to answer, or to not have it ring. But we answer anyway.
For whom doth that bell toll – thee, or me?
