JOY OF PIE

Pie.
Everybody loves pie.
In life, in business, in sales – everybody wants a slice of the pie. Always, a bigger slice than competitors. Or two slices …
So often in competitive sales organizations, competitors duke it out for their slice, their share – always expressed in actions designed to take business away from a competitor. This makes no sense, but it has always been thus despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
For example, when Henry Ford and others were building their first cars, were any of them trying to capture a share of the buggy-whip or buggy making business? Of course not, because they weren’t selling a new version of the horse and buggy. They didn’t want a slice of someone else’s pie – they made new pie. Bigger pie, and there was plenty of new pie for anyone who wanted to enter the business.
Silicon Valley has countless examples. Did anyone try to take away taxi or hotel business from taxi and hotel companies? No, they wanted a quicker way to get a cab, or to get some cash by renting space in an apartment – simple motives, smart young guys – and you get Uber and AirBNB.
And what about Apple. Walkman, iPod, iPhone … and I don’t know what’s next …
We can fight over pie, or create pie.
What drives you?
