Or building a marriage, business, organization – relationships, institutions – whatever you were building, you thought you were building reputation, portfolio of your best work, stunning CV, sustainable enterprise or work of art …
And really, that whole time – you were just raising expectations.
Yours, everyone else’s.
What were those expectations anyway? Reasonable, balanced, fair – ‘old tapes’ playing in our heads – expectations planted by parents, teachers, siblings, schoolmates, leaders of church and state, media, self-help books, DIY guides?
Wherever those expectations began, were they valid? Did we look in the mirror and see our own reality to ‘expectations we were supposed to live up to’, and if we didn’t make a correction, were we driven by our own desires/ambitions and ideas or by conformity to what was expected by those with expectations?
