ALMOST SPRINGTIME – 5 more sleeps!
Monday, March 15, 2021 – daily column #6697
We are in the midst of innumerable realities beyond March’s midpoint.
With vaccinations impending now for many of us, almost everyone we encounter is looking forward to summer climbs and hikes with more enthusiasm and zeal than cabin-fever typically produces.
Of course, this pandemic is not over, but we are mostly over feeling so badly about it because there is relief ahead. All other problems of the world are still there, they’ve mostly paused or been made worse, so post-pandemic euphoria will make some people a lot of money, and far too many who were whacked by shutdowns and COVID won’t recover at all. What do we do about that? Who do we hold accountable? Yes, all three levels of government own part of it. As does every bank and every Bay Street and Wall Street profiteer – who will hold them to account?
The poor, the working poor, and the sidelined/unemployed poor are hurt the worst in times of trouble, and they are the least powerful among us. What do we do for them?
It’s like we’ve lost a year of peace, a year of relaxation, and a year of play.
Winter is nearly done, so when it keeps snowing, just call them spring-snow-showers.
Enjoy your Monday, enjoy spring – it’s just around the corner.
P.S.: on Sunday, March 13, 1960, my family arrived in Calgary, and on that Monday, we drove to our new home in Red Deer. Later that week, I was introduced to school, Alberta style, at Grandview Elementary in Red Deer. For the first time that day, I heard an Alberta classic tune – When It’s Springtime In The Rockies.
