FLEXING A MUSCLE
Thursday, March 17, 2022

We know what exercise does. The routine running or pumping iron and the repetition of the repetitions are only a glimpse of the elite athlete’s performance. Whether we are very familiar with physical training and muscle memory, or if we’ve only read about it, we can benefit from so many metaphors about these elements of fitness, particularly with that large muscle between our ears.

Flexing a muscle or part of our body or mind is about routine, repetition, and testing ourselves.

Writing every day, speaking every day, going through the motions and routine of our work every day also fit this dynamic. This knowing, that if we make something a habit – anything, if it is good for us, it is probably many fold better if we repeat daily. Walk daily, exercise daily, naps, sleep, planned better eating, more vigorous exercise, more discipline in sticking to a plan …

I could go on for pages, but I believe I’ve made my point. Not building habits is like having a gym membership but not going – nothing happens unless we do the work.

Start small, but start, and if you started but then fell back, start again - and keep going.

P.S. to those who have Irish in them, happy St. Patrick’s Day

Reader feedback:

PATIENCE v. TIME
Thank you for speaking out loud..not loud enough. War is wrong.  Is a sad time for humankind. The rich get richer and never suffer the consequences of their decisions. Power in a small soul will always generate monsters, AG, Cancun, Mex.
