PRESSURE IS OFF and ON
Thursday Mar. 28, 2019
Inspiration is peculiar.
Some days it flows like a fire-hydrant.
Or no flow at all.
Worst of all is when there is a need coupled with a deadline, to come up with something – and it just won’t come …
I’ve had this problem recently.
Pressure was on with no time to waste. The first got solved by confluence of something I saw on a Netflix show, an old family photo and one extraneous idea – presto, inspiration. Energy flowed. The purpose? A humorous speech for a Toastmasters Area Humorous Speech Contest. I won. Costume and story came together well – it flowed, they laughed, I had a blast and the judges were with me!
The second conundrum, also for Toastmasters; International Speech contest was this wrestle in my head between using the speech from my club competing I’ve been working on for a long while (but feeling was weak) vis-à-vis creating something completely new – a decision I made with just three days to go. There had been a 10 day opportunity, but seven had passed already. I was drawing a complete blank. It was Sunday – three days to go, pressure was on. I told couple of stories about focus vs. fear and worked in a story about a friend’s feared illness that was a false alarm. It worked, and again the judges liked it better than the other competitors. I won.
Pressure is off!
Next stop, Division competitions April 13th . Two weeks to practice and fine-tune.
Pressure is on again …
Did I mention I love competitions?
