CAUSE AND EFFECT
… get up early so you don’t miss any
Sunday May 18, 2014
Take away something from anything, eventually less will diminish to nothing, leaving emptiness.
Is emptiness cause, or effect?
I write what I see.
That is effect.
When that triggers thoughts or actions, it is cause.
Not playing word games – but trying to think this through. Cause and effect is so often written about as some fundamental law of the universe, as truth not to be questioned.
Is it true?
Is it visible, can you capture it in a jar?
If it is a law, everything should connect, everything – both a cause and effect.
If something is happening, something caused it.
If you do something – anything – then you are its cause. There will be some effect, somewhere, somehow.
No cause?
No effect?
Hard to imagine . . .
I wonder every time I try something that doesn’t work out as planned, hoped or predicted – imagine failed efforts, however wisely constructed, having no impact on anything.
Cause, effect – how can you separate them?
Each is a cause. Each is an effect.
This morning, we say that deer lurking again – same yard. We watched slowly from a distance. There is a tree in that yard. Last fall’s berries, hanging there, food for an early rising deer.
The deer, there for us to see – though I’m sure Gusta sees it as just a very large dog – but which is cause, which is effect?
Two years ago today, very early in the morning, birth of that baby girl named Isla was the cause.
The effect?
I will now always be a grandpa, eager to attend any birthday party.
Hitting the road soon, gotta go to a party.

very early morning walk: 8C / 46F, overcast and humid, showers predicted – we came upon that deer again (assuming it is the same one, but who knows?). At first I thought it was the lights (the property owner next door to that spot leaves their twinkly white Christmas lights on all year) the drew the deer. But, clearly, we were wrong – it was blackened winter-survived berries on a tree that caused it to be there, marvelous to watch him standing perfectly still, rotating his head to follow Gusta’s actions as we walked all the way down the street, then coming back, nibbling berries while he watched us. How were the voyeurs? Who were we – cause, or effect?
Reader feedback / comments always welcome:
Me, silent? surely you jest. Never happen. Have been busy with the new prosthetic and the garden which is growing leaps and bounds. Also raising 20 chickens and 2 ducks. Live on the farm has been very distracting from my usual computer time. Trying to catch up just seems an insurmountable task some days. The sun has been shining and the air unseasonably cool so the outside has been beckoning. Also practicing walking as well as gardening with my new leg. I had become so comfortable on the one leg that two is quite challenging. Getting accolades from the prosthetic doctor as well as the physical therapist. I manage the time with the leg on without pain most days. Still have an occasional bad one and can't wait for those to go away. Busy away from the computer is all that has been happening. Don't foresee ever losing track of your Musings. Seem to be able to catch up reading them but it is so much later than the original posting that if I have a comment I think its' time has passed. Still here!, GW, Bon Wier, TX
