LAYERS UPON LAYERS

A glimpse.
A glimmer.
Which is it?
Do we see something magical, something with potential – or is it the dream we see, the wish for something/someone, and we think this is it/him/her, we want it so much.
We’ve had so many oops moments that we’d instead hold back, sideline-sit and make a turtle. Our shells get hard, and our ability to retreat works faster than auto-correct on our computer screen …
Catch a dream, capture a thought, sprinkle with enthusiasm, and you have to have that next new thang everyone is talking about. Every new thing on earth started that way.
And every relationship of value – with persons, or pursuits, starts that way too.
Life is long – we have lots of time, a century or more for most of us alive today is a reasonable aspiration, so there is no rush.
But life is short, and when we stare out at the universe or archaeologists scratch the dirt beneath us, we realize that centuries are minutes in time compared to the life of this place. Whether we live in long-civilized parts of the world or in the new world where we’ve only been doing life as we know it for a few hundred years, we all stand on the same old rock with 6.5 billion years of layered sediment beneath us.
