NINETY DAYS
Wednesday May 23, 2018
I read of a writer explaining a conversation with someone he interviewed – someone rich and famous and wise – nub of it, was the question that person asked of that writer, “who is the most fascinating person you’ve met in the last 90 days?”.
So, have you met anyone new in the last 90 days? Sure, but which was the most fascinating – and why?
And how do we find out if they are fascinating? We engage, we have an experience* with them.
I meet new people in the context of my work, my involvements with writing and publishing all the time, and I interview people for my publication. But I’ve never stopped to articulate ‘who was the most fascinating?’.
In the last 90 days I’ve met many people in passing (don’t we all?) who haven’t grabbed my attention (not yet) to warrant that description. Some I would include are people I’ve known (if you call it knowing) much longer but only recently got to know them in a meaningful way. I’ve found this question sticking in my mind, each time I shake a new hand or am on a phone with someone new, wondering, whether this person might be the most fascinating person I spent time with in the last 90 days?
Alters nearly every new encounter …
I recently did a couple of interviews, had a couple of lunches and toured some properties with a couple of clients – each with ‘that question’ in my mind. The conversations were far more interesting and the lessons I learned about each of them more profound and interesting than I would have ordinarily imagined.
*tune in tomorrow for my new twist on ‘experience’
