MORE AND LESS
Friday May 24, 2019
I love to talk. Love to write.
Yes, sometimes I go on, and on, and on …
More I speak, more I write.
I’ve learned there is greater value in saying less – not more, writing less – meaning more. ‘Less is more’ has become a cute cliché but it doesn’t just apply to fashion, home decorating and sales presentations. Less can mean better. Less can me more succinct. Less can be clearer. Simpler.
Writing prose is limited only by how many pages of blank paper you can find. Writing poetry, conversely, the art of removing words – conveying more meaning with fewer words. If you can say it, you can say it in fewer words. You just have to try. If you can write it, you can shorten it. Shorten it again. And again. Now, again, just less.

Epicurean philosophy suggests we engage with friends who reflect, not only our interests but, our values. Stoic philosopher Seneca also held that true friends should inspire us to improve and become happier. Uplifting and enlightening friends. Wake up as that person. Befriend yourself. Invite those friends as you go through life ‘fishing’. Yes, ‘whose on your boat?’ Lucky to have you onboard Mark, Fish :)/JF, Calgary, AB
