| LEAVES OUT
Thursday, May 6, 2021
Yesterday was my first-leaves day. Of course, others have witnessed these bursts of green days already, but it was my first peering at leaves fully open – indeed, this growing season has begun …
A joyous time, to be sure, but who is exuberant?
Life, or death, is ahead for all of us.
As our government sidesteps complete lockdown, instead choosing to tweak and pause and shift lanes yet again for the next three weeks to blunt COVID’s latest case surge, life and death expectations of our fellow citizens are again in jeopardy.
Everyone feels grumpy, but (thankfully!) most of us are well, uninfected and/or vaccinated. So who does this ‘collectively doing good’ really serve, whom does it help, and why are so many people defying rules with reckless behaviours?
We don’t feel vulnerable or at risk.
We are.
Too many Albertans are acting like this pandemic is a political agenda, a hoax and/or an infringement on their rights.
I don’t wish anyone ill health, but if they were hospitalized, if they had a family member in hospital for any reason or had a frontline caregiver in their family, I expect they’d be singing a different tune.
We don’t feel vulnerable or at risk.
Most of us aren’t.
But what if hospitals get plugged – and somebody has a heart attack, ruptures an appendix, breaks a vital bone or has a stroke?
Then, there may not be enough capacity, rendering us all equally vulnerable to not having medical services when we most need them.
Reader feedback:
Morning Mark, Ve get too soon oldt, und too late schmart.” I too had this little plaque over my Grandfather's couch on his porch and at the early times growing up couldn't understand the meaning, "Well I do understand it fully now" haha! Enjoy your columns each day. Cheer, LA, Yellowknife, NT
I agree we need more openness and truthfulness, especially in the big picture, but we are still left to decide what are the details that matter to someone who matters. For me, it could be any and all details if they matter enough and they wish to know. LH, Lethbridge, AB
