Winnipeg may be the coldest place in Canada, but when it comes to entertainment talent, it’s one of the hottest. Last night I watched one of my favourite music guys – Randy Bachman, whose radio show I often catch on Saturday evenings called Vinyl Tap. There’s a new documentary (Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap) on Amazon Prime which weaves the remarkable history of his bands and music every Canadian who lived through the sixties and seventies can appreciate – part of that long legacy of great Canadian entertainers from Winnipeg (David Steinberg, Wayne & Shuster, Anna Paquin, Fred Penners, Len Cariou, Neil Young, Monty Hall, Belinda Montgomery, Burton Cummings, and Doug Henning.)
Hearing anecdotes of how some of their greatest songs originated is inspiring to anyone who writes anything, or as Nora Ephron used to say, “Everything is copy.”
