#METOO
Media frenzy garnered attention, emotion and revelation.
Individual women standing tall and proud and courageously for the first time. It’s not over. It’s barely begun …
We’ve seen celebrities, ordinary people, anonymous folks – calling out/exposing abuse, abusers. Revealing pain, suffering, emotions – much media light shed. Good. Shed too on previously untouchable powerful men; some previously exposed, some exposed for the first time – much scrutiny too for those who stood by, knowing – yet staying silent.
One has to wonder if it wasn’t for outrageous acts of Donald Trump, Roger Ayles types, if these outings of similar bad acts and actors/movie moguls etc. would have occurred. Why does the corporate world, media too – and public so revere these people?
Is it because they did bad deeds with swagger as if they were immune to rules, laws and consequences – because it isn’t about power (they were powerful already), it wasn’t about sex (they could buy more services than Charlie Sheen might ever dream of) … so why do they, why did they, do it? Some are gone, some will never recover – some have risen/repented again and again (i.e., Bill Clinton, Elliot Spitzer, Dominique Strauss-Kahn). Some never will (i.e., Jian Ghomeshi, Anthony Wiener, Bill O’Reilly). Sex scandals, spin, politics and public relations rehab are not new. It strikes me that scandals are far easier to recover from than embezzlement, fraud or killing someone …
I applaud. Add my voice to the chorus. For change. I am, as many men are – asking “what can we do to change things?” OK, not every man gets it – but most mainstream men understand right from wrong, ethical from unethical.
