ELECTION DAY IN CALGARY
Monday, October 18, 2021
I don’t care whom you vote for, but if you sit home not voting – you may, in effect, be voting for someone you don’t want by not casting a ballot for someone you do want in office. You might not care about who the school board trustees are or the council members in 14 wards, but you might care about whether water gets fluoridated, who gets to be a senator.
We did a great project – YOUR VOTE MATTERS! This video lets you hear from 20 of 27 candidates for mayor, each of them accepted our invitation to address questions on issues affecting older Calgarians. Some of them drifted into campaign speak, but mostly they proved themselves to be sincere people who want to show why they should be your choice. In the time it takes to have two cups of coffee, you can watch one hour of entertaining and informative talk that might help you determine whom you want to see elected. It did for me. Vote on every question, or vote on only one – just vote. In too many parts of the world, elections are absent or complete shams – and even when they are supposed to be legitimate, in many places, their weight and impact are questionable.
We have integrity in our election systems in Canada when so many places do not.
Here, today, there are many worthy candidates. They’ve invested time, effort and money in pursuit of public service to us all – they are bravely and oh so publicly, on a ballot.
We owe it to them, to our communities, to take part.
Go vote!
Reader feedback:
Hi Mark, I want to mention that I really like the new addition to your column—the videos. What a great way this is to change things up a bit. The two that have been posted so far have added a personal touch to your writing as well as providing insight into the motivation behind it. In particular, I especially enjoyed hearing more about Fish Creek Park. I’m looking forward to seeing the next one, HW, Calgary, AB
Mark, I really liked HW’s response to your previous musing. I am so happy for both of you. New wonders and beginnings, RT, White Rock, BC
