I was reading a piece the other day – about free speech in the internet/social media malaise argue-fest called ‘counting down to the U.S. election’ or November 8th, their day that might … live in infamy. The debate seems about as winnable as middle-agers (that time in history, not ‘us’) when how many angels could occupy the head of a pin dominated after dinner conversation …
On November 9th, most of the world can live with either outcome. Worst/strangest/scariest case, ‘the Donald’ wins a mandate and has a Republican controlled House and Senate. How run amok/amuck could that be?
Best case, Clinton wins a strong mandate and has a Democrat controlled House and Senate.
What is at stake? For Canada, for the rest of the world – clarity, less noise, stability, predictability.
For Americans, re-forming or reaffirming what is best and worst about their country and what is truly peculiar and archaic (wisely or not) about its Electoral College system of choosing their leader. The absurdity of a polarized country whose election process was invented for a different epoch of history – and a collective unwillingness to change. And could it, really, when excellence, integrity and wisdom combine so rarely in one individual who can be both popular and powerful at the same time. They continue to get that one very wrong …
