SUGAR HIGH TIME
Sunday, October 31, 2021
Good morning and happy Oct. 31st – it’s like a creaky rusty old gate hinge that creaks – a reminder of childhood days in costumes covered by parkas as we trudged door-to-door with a pillowcase in need of filling with candy. A day of ghouls and goblins, all things orange and black. For some, and for some faiths, it is either anathema or simply stupid. It’s not a Hallmark holiday, but the retailers and suppliers of decorations, candy and costumes count on it.
Some people (usually ones who have young children) decorate and leave their porch lights on. Most people give out the candy they’ve not already eaten themselves. Some turn off their lights and hide in the dark – perhaps a metaphor about their lives …
Today is whatever you make it to be. Every day is, but this is a Hallowe’en Sunday, all hallows-eve, a celebration of pagan rituals morphed into sugar-high kids who need to be clear-headed for Monday morning classes.
Reader feedback:
Mark, as usual, you are right again. I’ve said many times before to follow the money. For some reason we seem to be bringing more things out of the shadows recently and (I’m not surprised) they all seem to show those with the money made them go the way they wanted even though I can’t seem to think of one that was also done correctly. It’s amazing to me that the human sense of right and wrong can so easily be overcome with a little money. LH, Lethbridge, AB
