A NEW GEAR

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 - column #7113

Reality comes in bites, bytes, shocks and awes – it has us recoil and exclaim, “WOW, that big news?”

Reality comes with laughter and tears, magic and fears, bringing us back from the brink of disaster, or propelling us, lifting us higher than we ever dreamt.

Yes, yes, give me reality, but the optimistic kind, please.

The bold kind, the ambitious kind, and the winning formula, too, please.

On the other hand, fantasy can be a literary or entertainment diversion/hobby and passion.

Still, when we diverge from reality without a foundation or tether, we are floating on a nightmare hot air balloon in a windstorm.

For most of us, the baby steps we take as toddlers repeat in our timid ways when we avoid reality or hold back from realizing our boldest ambitions.

Over the weekend, I was mixing too little play and a lot of work, some of which was thrilling (pulling a team together to pitch worthy projects – one has a looming deadline). As I sent an update to a key team member yesterday morning, his response included, “Sounds like you’ve got your second wind,” and I do feel that. There are many reasons, moving parts, colleagues and friends, fresh self-discoveries (i.e. learning to harness and medicate my ADHD), and immense gratitude for Hazel’s support – but it’s not so much a second wind as ‘a new gear.’
