we CAN handle the truth
Saturday, December 18, 2021
In A Few Good Men, Jack Nicholson’s character Colonel Nathan Jessop bellowed, “You want the truth, you can’t handle the truth!”
What is the value of a friend who doesn’t tell the truth?
What is the value of a client/colleague/collaborator who doesn’t tell you the truth?
Not much.
What, then, do we say to ourselves when we don’t speak the truth to ourselves?
I pose that question while recognizing/admitting, far too many times, that I’ve not been honest, and I’ve deflected/excused and avoided facing/accepting truth.
I might deserve to cut myself some slack on such actions that took place a very long time ago. But reality doesn’t square with that wish.
There is liberation, maybe an adrenaline-fed exhilaration that comes from truth-telling.
The more microscopic the truth, the greater sense of relief and freedom we feel.
