WARM INSIDE
Tuesday, May 10, 2022
Stress-free tranquillity was me yesterday, home alone and enjoying spring snow. Errands can wait, outings can wait, warm inside, hunkered in a way I used to know …
Yesterday began as the perfect morning scene – temperature just above freezing, then not, stillness and big wet fluffy flakes were falling – not winter, not spring, the so crisp and fresh and this walker feeling strong and standing taller than usual. That feeling changed swiftly as walking briskly morphed into ‘careful steps, every step’ and fear of being in the emergency room with something broken overtook me. I expelled a relief sigh on returning home. The joy of the beautiful morning would be enjoyed inside with hot coffee and breakfast/newspapers. For many, yesterday’s slips and falls will require medical attention. Slip-sliding cars negotiating turns and hills will find brutish tires, and good brakes find little traction, so auto body shops love days like that; insurance companies not so much.
Pre-pandemic, pre-shutdowns, I remember days like that – but yesterday was the first by choice in a long while, happy and quiet. I worked, of course, but the phone rarely rings here, and the work can go smoothly without interruptions, and that makes you feel warm inside.
