FEAR OF FAILING, ECLIPSED BY FEAR OF FLAILING
Tuesday, November 2, 2021

The do-over is fine in backyard games and sometimes in life.

But we don’t get second chances as often as we would like them.

Writing a lot, or a lot over a long time, does not make someone good or ‘as good as’ anyone – we all need to find our voice. Or it needs to find us. We need to be as good as ourselves, as unique as ourselves at our best, and we need to give up trying to copy or emulate anyone else’s style,

I’ve been rethinking this entire subject lately. I’ve un-parked my novel project and am re-attacking it with a couple of significant shifts. The first, a breath of fresh air emotionally that comes from some new experiences and some new people in my life. The second is the realization that the entire thing needs to be re-written from a different perspective. Daunting, but fun just the same.

Is this a metaphor for starting a new relationship?

Perhaps it is.

Fail protection is like fall protection – fear that a slip-up becomes a slippery slope to giving up, or being unable to get up again.
