I got annoyed the other day, wrote my thoughts – and then hit SEND.

That, you might say, is when the trouble started …

I sent one of those emails. You know the kind – the kind you can never un-send.

I regret having hit send without editing. I could have waited, edited some more, waited – or maybe having a conversation with someone.

More importantly, in retrospect, it wasn’t the fact that I was upset or that my note was clumsily written – it’s just that it was genuine frustration, only directed at the wrong party. It begs the question we need all ask now and then, “so, who are you really angry at?” …

The cascade of impacts was not without some predictable consequences – and much was learned. Upon reflection, my sentiment was right, but my target was the wrong one. When something like that happens, it’s a painful but valuable lesson to springboard from, but the leap is a better one because of the mistake, because of the stumble and too – for the struggle with the apology.

Reader feedback:

THOUGHT TRAIN DERAILMENT
Your column today made me smile. The same thing has happened to me many times and it’s frustrating. Usually I’m in the shower when I have my most brilliant ideas or do my best problem solving, so recording a note on my phone wouldn’t count as one of those brilliant ideas. And there’s no way to stop trivial thoughts from burying the brilliant ones. Dirty socks trump world peace every time, HW, Calgary, AB
