WITHIN SPITTING DISTANCE
Monday Sept. 2, 2019
How close did you come?
Meaning, how close to what you were aiming for?
Depends.
Meeting your goals? Or getting closer?
Depends.
Winning, sure – that’s lovely, but isn’t coming 2nd or 3rd OK?
Depends.
In most situations, with only one prize, coming 2nd or 10th doesn’t matter much, or does it?
Depends.
Being 10th in line for food when there is enough for 50? Fine. If only enough food for nine, that’s a different matter.
Depends.
Winning the job, or coming 2nd? Being first in line when a store opens, or 2nd?
Depends.
If we believe we should be first, then coming 2nd or 10th or last offers little satisfaction. If attending, showing up, is what matters, then we measure differently, right?
Depends.
Sometimes we win the race to get somewhere first, sometimes we get really close – within spitting distance, but don’t quite make it. Is that success, or failure, or something else entirely?
Depends.
Circumstances of every test in life will likely be different – we don’t get to choose facts, timing or location. Our only choice is how we feel about it, right? That, depends.
If we have a goal, do we have to hit it – or just get close?
Depends … .
