What happened before what happened, happened?
I learned that phrase, in context, from friend Nancy Lowery – she was discussing her examination of what happened before her horse threw her, because the actual trigger for events is rarely what just happened, and more often the consequence of something that happened before that moment.
In political circles everywhere in Canada, especially here in Alberta, much chatter today, not about the outcome of the election nobody wanted, the results of which nobody is happy about – but about what happened before what happened, happened.
Our collective will has manifested, and we don’t like the results.
And, as we know, the first day after an election is a day when all politicians begin planning anew, so they can be ready for the next one. My bet is that both Liberals and Conservatives will keep their leaders, and then we’ll have another election in the spring when the opposition parties bring down the government on a non-confidence motion; that’s my prediction.
Sadly too, for Alberta conservatives, while everyone is focused on Ottawa – Albertans need to be focused on a public health crisis and managing our way through the mess/malaise of it all, but elected officials and media are focused on the next angst-circus, challenging the leadership of the Premier from within his party. He finally fired Health Minister Shandro and did a cabinet shuffle. Some of that is necessary, some are tactics to keep the Premier’s caucus intact, yet it feels more like close-up techniques of magicians, sleight-of-hand so deft you overlook the obvious …
AND yes, today is the first day of autumn, 2021.
Leaves are falling.
